Artist Spotlight: Suki Kuss "Pure and Simple"

Suki Kuss, You Aren't Here, Mixed media collage, 12 x 12"
Suki Kuss’ newest exhibition at TAG gallery, Pure and Simple, is a study of her ever-evolving sensibility as an artist over the past several years. While Kuss’ inspirations, approach, and outlook continue to grow with an embryonic sense of discovery, the content and technique remain constant. The search for the perfect dichotomy between balance and quietude is the foremost theme in her practice.
Suki Kuss, You Aren't Here III, Mixed media collage, 12 x 12"
The death of Kuss’ 100-year-old mother in early 2017 set the tone for the work in this show, casting a reflective shroud on individual pieces. Both dark and illuminating, the work encompasses Kuss’ many emotional moments and thoughts in the process of grieving and rejoicing the many years of her mother’s life. Hand drawn line work, patterns, and texture serve as reminders of Kuss’ delicate connection to her mother, navigating the viewer through an abstract narrative of the mother-daughter relationship.

Working in a very pale, austere palette or rich black surfaces, the push and pull of the canvases plays on the thought that opposites seem to attract. Life and death, black and white, smooth and textured, are all examples Kuss explores through this series of canvases.

Pure and Simple is a tribute to the differences and moments that form our lives and how one chooses to navigate those setbacks and opportunities. As such with this exhibition Kuss asks viewers to contemplate, scrutinize, process, and analyze their own narratives.
