Artist Spotlight: Anne M Bray #mycommute

Anne M Bray, 60W, Digital watercolor on paper, 21 x 23"
Daily commutes are a perennial topic of conversation for residents of greater Los Angeles. Most in the City of Angels are not afforded the luxury of living within walking distance of their workplace. Anne M Bray is no stranger to this phenomenon and has an 80 mile round trip trek, between Mar Vista to Irwindale, four times a week. In her exhibition #mycommute, Bray demonstrates how she has transformed her hours spent behind the wheel into creative pursuits.

During the mornings, she focuses her attention on the back ends of trucks. In the evenings, Bray finds her gaze drawn to the play of light on freeway overpasses and the buildings of downtown.

Photos are captured with her phone, and then undergo a transformation into digital watercolors using a phone app called Waterlogue. She then shares the images on social media. For this exhibition, the trucks are printed and fused onto aluminum and are displayed in thematic grids. The roadscapes are printed on paper.

With #mycommute, Bray transforms the drudgery of commuting into an act of exploration and wonder using a variety mediums and technology. The exhibition offers a new way of looking at the daily drive, be it to work or homeward.

Artist Spotlight: Suki Kuss "Pure and Simple"

Suki Kuss, You Aren't Here, Mixed media collage, 12 x 12"
Suki Kuss’ newest exhibition at TAG gallery, Pure and Simple, is a study of her ever-evolving sensibility as an artist over the past several years. While Kuss’ inspirations, approach, and outlook continue to grow with an embryonic sense of discovery, the content and technique remain constant. The search for the perfect dichotomy between balance and quietude is the foremost theme in her practice.
Suki Kuss, You Aren't Here III, Mixed media collage, 12 x 12"
The death of Kuss’ 100-year-old mother in early 2017 set the tone for the work in this show, casting a reflective shroud on individual pieces. Both dark and illuminating, the work encompasses Kuss’ many emotional moments and thoughts in the process of grieving and rejoicing the many years of her mother’s life. Hand drawn line work, patterns, and texture serve as reminders of Kuss’ delicate connection to her mother, navigating the viewer through an abstract narrative of the mother-daughter relationship.
Suki Kuss, Night Music, Mixed media collage, 10 x 12"
Working in a very pale, austere palette or rich black surfaces, the push and pull of the canvases plays on the thought that opposites seem to attract. Life and death, black and white, smooth and textured, are all examples Kuss explores through this series of canvases.
Suki Kuss, Edges of the World XII, Mixed media collage, 10 x 12"
Pure and Simple is a tribute to the differences and moments that form our lives and how one chooses to navigate those setbacks and opportunities. As such with this exhibition Kuss asks viewers to contemplate, scrutinize, process, and analyze their own narratives.

Artist Spotlight: Dan Lencioni "Aggregations"

Dan Lencioni, 2 x 2 #1, Mixed media, 24 x 24"
Aggregations is Dan Lencioni’s debut exhibition at TAG.
Dan Lencioni, 2 x 2 #4, Mixed media, 24 x 24"
Lencioni starts a piece in a chaotic fashion by placing materials of all kinds on the surface. These random textured irregularities interrupt his sketches and mark making, heightening the tensions of the surface structure through instinctive primal expression. Lencioni is not interested in depicting a specific story, but interested in establishing a space to explore.
Dan Lencioni, Grid 5, Mixed media, 48 x 48"
For the artist, each piece is an expression of a feeling. All the basic ingredients become an art form when they come to life in the eyes of the viewer. Each piece is flexible enough to express different emotions to individual viewers. The overall concept is the same, but to Lencioni, the final product is a magical, empathetic and sublime experience.
